Experiment 27324: UAT Noise Measurement

Abstract
During DRDC Atlantic sea trial Q273, experiment 27324 was conducted. It was designed to measure ambient noise using the UAT (Underwater Acoustic Target) and to compare measured ambient noise levels to the theoretical values expected. A comparison of the measured ambient noise levels to the Wenz ambient noise spectra and to noise levels measured using a test hydrophone in the MANTArray (Multi-Aperture Networked Towed Array) seemed to indicate that 7 of the 8 hydrophones (channels 0-2 and 4-7) forming the UAT receive array were measuring levels significantly higher than expected from standard ambient noise curves and than measured by the MANTArray and the eighth hydrophone (channel 3), over the frequency range 0 Hz – 4 kHz. When a signal was present, UAT channel 3 showed the same difference from the other UAT channels in that part of the frequency band unoccupied by the signal, but a less than 2 dB difference in the frequency band occupied by the signal.
