Abstract
This work describes the evaluation of the impacts of the live firing training activities in Cold Lake Air Weapons Range (CLAWR) in Alberta performed during August 03 (Phase II). The study was conducted by DRDC Valcartier in collaboration with the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), Cold Regions Research Engineering Laboratory (CRREL), Hanover, NH, and the ERDC Environmental Laboratory (EL), Vicksburg, MS to complete the first evaluation performed during Phase I. Four ranges on the site were re-visited during August 2003. More precisely, in Alpha and Bravo ranges, more vegetation and background samples were collected for metal analyses while for Jimmy Lake and Shaver River ranges, more sampling was done to ascertain the metal and explosive concentrations. Surface water and sediment were also evaluated in Jimmy Lake and Primerose Lake. The circular sampling strategy was achieved in Jimmy Lake and Shaver River ranges. The linear transect strategy was applied to Alpha and Jimmy Lake ranges. In Shaver River range, another strategy consisting in collecting 100 discrete samples was accomplished in front of the target. In total, 324 soil samples, 69 vegetation samples, 19 surface water and 28 sediment samples were collected during Phase II. Metal analyses were done using Inductively Coupled Plasma /Mass spectrometry (ICP/MS) and explosives concentrations were deternined using the High Pressure Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) Method EPA 8330.
