Abstract
The Virtual Combat Systems (VCS) Group at Defence Research and Development Canada – Atlantic (DRDC Atlantic) is aiming to provide a combat systems experimentation facility to assist with the research programs of scientists within the Maritime Information and Combat Systems (MICS) section and beyond. The first such experiment, known as Virtual Battle Experiment Canada-1 (VBE CA-1), investigated the influence of coalition sharing of broadband passive sonar track segment data. The experiment required sonar operators to monitor vessel traffic in a strait and make decisions about which sonar tracks were from common targets. In some cases, sonar track data was available to the operator from a coalition ship, and in other cases the operators were only provided with sonar track data from their own sonar. The experiment was run multiple times with various subjects to obtain statistically relevant results. This paper focuses on the technical activities that were completed in preparation for this experiment. Scenario development, selection, development and integration of simulation components, and testing of the architecture are discussed.
