Abstract
This report is an investigation of the Kirchhoff approximation for the 3D acoustic target strength of simple geometric shapes and their combinations. In particular, it gives expressions for the out-of-plane bistatic scattering strengths of a variety of simple shapes, including the cylinder, the truncated cone and the ellipsoid. Previous investigations have given similar results for the in-plane bistatic case using the Bistatic Theorem to deduce bistatic formulae from monostatic results. The out-of-plane results given here do not depend upon the Bistatic Theorem, but require a detailed analysis of the viewed/illuminated area for each simple shape.
