Abstract
In anticipation of the outcomes of the on-going defence policy review, the Air Force has established a Tiger Team whose mandate is to propose options for a transformed Air Force structure. This transformation is driven primarily by hypothetical changes to the Air Force budget. One of the areas being scrutinized is search and rescue (SAR). This technical report documents the support to SAR transformation provided by the Directorate of Air Staff Operational Research. The optimal location of SAR bases is determined using the TRANSIT metric which simultaneously addresses the dual requirements of maximizing the number of incidents within the range of the SAR aircraft and minimizing the total distance travelled to reach these incidents. The solutions obtained using this metric are also compared against base configurations derived by using other common SAR performance metrics.
