Static Electromagnetic Fields of an Underwater Pipeline

Abstract
Analytical expressions for the static electromagnetic fields due to a pipeline are given for the permanent and induced magnetic fields as well as the corrosion related electric and magnetic fields. Randomly oriented dipoles are used for the permanent magnetic field while the induced field is calculated using the solution of a hollow cylinder in a uniform field. For the corrosion related electric field, expressions for a line source with multiple point current sources representing sacrificial anodes is derived. Using current monopole theory the electric model is equivalently represented with current filaments to provide expressions for the corrosion related magnetic field. A comparison of the magnetic field strengths is provided and the fall-off rates predicted by the models is shown. Maple’s Vector Calculus library is used extensively in the derivations and Maple worksheets with the full solution details are provided in the appendix.
