Abstract
Naval dive teams’ duties require them to clear sea mines during times of crisis or during clean up operations. The Diver Signature Integrated Measurement System (DSIMS) being developed by DRDC Atlantic provides the capability for divers to assess whether their equipment and procedures are within specification. Deep DiveEx 05 held at the Fleet Diving Unit (Atlantic) in Halifax, NS Canada from August 29 to September 9, 2005 provided a unique opportunity to test DSIMS. As part of the exercise, dive teams from the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Finland and Sweden visited the DRDC Atlantic saltwater tank to evaluate their MCM life support equipment using DSIMS. For the trials DSIMS was equipped with acoustic, 3-axis magnetic field and 3-axis electric field sensors. The DSIMS software interface presents these sensor outputs, mine algorithm processing and an audio output to the dive team leader who monitors the operations on the surface. Each dive team was provided a copy their signature measurements along with playback software. This document provides a record of the saltwater tank operations and sufficient technical details of the DSIMS package to understand the recorded signatures. A more detailed look at the signature aspects of the diving equipment will be presented at a later date.
