Estimating the In-Plane Hydrodynamic Loads on a Submarine Hull at Incidence

Abstract
A fast, reasonably accurate method is required to estimate the in-plane loads on a submarine hull for DRDC’s component-based submarine simulation code DSSP21. For axisymmetric hulls, the present method I limited to incidence angles within about ±15 degrees. Empirically-based methods are presented that nearly double this range for hull shapes representative of submarines and most streamlined UUVs. However, there are additional difficulties if a keel or a deck casing is present. Their influence on the in-plane loads is discussed, but none of the method presently available can properly account for them.
