Cognitive Style Assessment and Adaptation to User Style in the LOCATE Workspace Layout Design Tool

- The work reported here involved research, design and implementation of a comprehensive cognitive styles infrastructure for the LOCATE workspace design tool, beginning with a thorough review of the recent cognitive styles literature. An integrated approach to classifying users’ cognitive styles was developed using measures of Verbal, Imagery, Kinaesthetic, Wholist and Analytic tendencies. LOCATE’s help materials were re-engineered to accommodate those tendencies. A major new resource was developed to provide users with procedural help on carrying out LOCATE tasks, through the use of animated demonstrations, kinaesthetic practice sessions, graphical instructions and new textual content. A new facility allows LOCATE’s help to be accessed using natural language queries. Substantial new multimedia support was added to LOCATE’s help system in the form of graphics, animations and some recorded narration. Three submissions were prepared on the cognitive style infrastructure, in the interest of promoting awareness of LOCATE in the research and applied communities. Finally, a key goal of the current research was to provide a foundation for conducting experimental studies into the effectiveness of LOCATE’s adaptive, cognitive styles support. Specifications were developed for conducting such a study, including: hypotheses to be tested, target populations, sample sizes, study design, methodology, analysis, and conclusions and implications.
