Abstract
Over the past several years, DRDC Atlantic has embarked on a program for the evaluation of existing technologies, as well as the development of new technologies for application in platform specific health monitoring systems. It has been envisioned that dedicated sensor, hardware, and software suites may be employed to provide engineering officers with real time monitoring with respect to the performance of critical ships' systems. Identified general applications for dedicated monitoring systems include assessing the rheological properties of main machinery lubricants, conducting rotating machinery vibration analysis, and measuring structural strain. The current study is focused primarily on the development of a prototype bench top test apparatus for the simulation of a diesel lubricant environment for the evaluation of rheological properties of main machinery lubricants. A bench top test apparatus for the simulation of the pressure and temperature characteristics of a diesel lubricant system has been successfully designed and fabricated as part of the current project. Components of the apparatus developed during the project included a closed oil circulation loop, a manifold for the inline evaluation of various sensors of interest, a custom electronics package for the acquisition of sensor data and control of system devices, and a custom software suite to provide a user interface for the post processing, display, and control of the system.
