Abstract
As urban operations are viewed as a significant challenge for the Canadian Forces and because there is an obvious need to visualise efficiently urban environments, DRDC Valcartier started in the Fall 1999 a project aimed at defining the various processes for the creation of 3D urban models. This project was achieved by comparing and analysing various digitalization methods, by using different software, data and modelisation processes. The results of this R&D project is a complete series of 3D urban models, featuring Downtown Quebec City, and the formalization of a complete and coherent methodological approach which considers constraints such as availability of data, creation time, budget, software, human qualifications, targeted precision and realism. The obtained models were integrated into a simulation framework, which makes it possible to use them for both exercise and experimentation purposes. The results obtained for the definition of the methodology for 3D urban models’ creation will guide military organizations in their efforts to build various types of 3D urban models to support urban operations.
