Abstract
The Canadian Navy’s Directorate of Maritime Ship Support in Summer 2005 asked DRDC Valcartier to look at various support options if Linux were to be implemented as the Navy’s new Halifax-class frigate C2 operating system [1]. This task was undertaken by senior defence scientist Mr. Robert Charpentier and his team. In Autumn 2005, the Navy requested that Mr.Charpentier and his team also briefly explore the license differences between two very popular Linux operating systems: Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Novell Suse Enterprise Linux. The goa lwas to have a simple, easy to understand and non-legal interpretation of the two licenses and conclude what, if any, particular impact either license could have over the possible implementation of Linux.
