Abstract
During the construction of the new virtual reality (VR) facility at DRDC Valcartier, it was determined early on that this facility would require one key component to drive it, the SGI Onyx4 visualization server. However, this computer system required certain specialized configurations in order for it to function correctly within this environment. Consequently, this required the reconfiguration of certain graphics-based configuration files that controlled the system’s high performance graphics subsystem. The SGI’s role in the VR environment is to provide near real time simulation-based capabilities for various high-end 3D models by leveraging the system’s integrated hardware and software subsystems. Furthermore, the main applications and toolkits provided with the system had to be fine-tuned to allow for the high level of performance required. This document, therefore, describes all the necessary system configuration and administration-related information required for configuring the system’s hardware and software subsystems that will be required for powering the VR environment.
