Abstract
This report presents the work that has been done at DRDC Valcartier in order to identify research and development areas that would be needed to support the compilation and exploitation of a recognized air picture (RAP) at the Air Operations Centre level. This was realised by reviewing existing documentation related to the different concepts of situational awareness used by the Canadian Air Force. The systems supporting different aspects of an air picture that are currently used or under investigation by the Air Force are presented, as well as previous and ongoing worldwide initiatives related to the different concepts of air pictures in support of operations. The study found that the RAP should be considered as the means of monitoring the situation and developing an understanding of what is going on in the field. It is an enabler to situation awareness that is also used as a tool for planning operations. The R&D aspects that would require further work to implement a dynamic RAP are discussed. The study identifies different capabilities, approaches and technologies that need to be further investigated to compile and exploit a dynamic RAP as an input for the management of Canadian Air Force resources for real-time operations.
