Abstract
MATRICS is a maritime traffic simulation that is primarily used to model shipping activity in the open-ocean. Its purpose is to autonomously generate vessel tracks that tend to reproduce historical shipping densities over time. The current implementation of MATRICS is tailored to be used with the US Naval Oceanographic Office’s Historical Temporal Shipping (HITS) database. Nevertheless, other sources of shipping density data could be used as input, and with minor modifications, the domain of applicability of MATRICS could be extended to inshore waters, to other types of traffic such as underwater vehicles or aircraft, or to predict the paths of natural phenomena like hurricanes.
