Abstract
Controlled vocabularies are described as a managed collection of terms, typically pertaining to a specialized subject or topic. The terms used in the vocabulary help define the data exchanges that occur in the subject and are thus important for discovering available data assets, or for specifying details on how to access and use the asset. Such vocabularies are referred to as usage and discovery vocabularies, respectively. Semantic and syntactic vocabularies are also discussed. The relationships between metadata standards and controlled vocabularies are described and points on the development of a controlled vocabulary are provided.
