Abstract
We report on the modifications of two mid-infrared laser sources in order to allow their use for studying laser jamming of IR trackers. These lasers, based upon optical parametric oscillators (OPO) pumped by a pulsed Nd:YAG laser, were modified by the addition of acousto-optical modulators (AOM) allowing to modulate the laser output power from a computer-generated pattern. We present the modifications to the lasers, the characterization of the modulators and the modified lasers, as well as the setup of the modulation interface. The modified lasers allow to generate complex modulation patterns, both in frequency and amplitude. The maximum values of modulation frequencies are limited by the 740 kS/s rate of the data acquisition card operated on two analog output channels, allowing to generate signals at frequencies up to 370 kHz. The extinction ratios obtained with the system are relatively low at full power (~1000-10000), but rise rapidly (>100000) with a slight decrease of the Nd:YAG pumping level.
