Abstract
In this experiment we evaluated the efficacy of employing two disparately-sized multi-mode pipe projectors (MMPP’s) in order to generate ultra-wideband signals and analyze the resulting waveform spectrum at increasing range. A high frequency MMPP and super subcomms MMPP were suspended below the acoustic calibration barge in Bedford Basin and driven in a bi-amplified configuration. Three different waveforms: Barker code, chirp and 50 kHz M-sequence were first spectrally corrected for the two-projector complex transmission curve and transmitted for measurement at various ranges. Data analysis showed that by utilizing these two MMPP’s in bi-amplified configuration, wideband acoustic waveforms could be accurately transmitted to ranges exceeding 700m at a drive level of 424 Vrms. This drive voltage implied a source level of greater than 129 dB re 1µPa2/Hz @ 1m over the 72 kHz-wide frequency band.
