Source Localization Using a PE-Based Backpropagation Algorithm

Abstract
During the development of the Rapidly Deployable Systems (RDS) Technology Demonstration Project, different techniques for localizing acoustic sources have been explored. This paper presents a localization technique based on the backpropagation of an acoustic field from a Vertical Line Array (VLA) using a Parabolic Equation (PE) model. In December 2004, the RDS were deployed in St. Margaret’s Bay, Nova Scotia, and recorded different acoustic sources. Recordings from the VLA were used to test the PE-based backpropagation algorithm and very promising results were obtained. In the particular environment of St. Margaret’s Bay, an underwater narrowband source was localized up to a range of 400 m from the array, and a surface broadband source was localized up to a range of 600 m.
