For several years, the RDE Group at DRDC Ottawa has been acquiring and processing airbornepolarimetric radar imagery from the Environment Canada Convair-580 aircraft. This guidedescribes how to use the various software packages to process polarimetric signal data and createuseful end-products for further analysis. This process uses software written for DRDC. Some ofthe programs are based on software originally written by CCRS. They were modified for DRDC.This is Version 2 of this user’s guide. Version 1 was published approximately one year ago andthere have been changes. With the “retirement” of an aging workstation, specific programs fordownloading and unpacking raw signal data from tape or disk file can no longer be used. Therewas also an issue with compatibility of tar archives. This prompted the archiving of the RDEcollection of polarimetric signal data.The processing begins by describing how to transfer signal and ancillary data off a DVD or othersource where the image, noise and ancillary data are already separated into 4 differentpolarization channels. The data are checked and the noise data evaluated. Other required datasources include inertial navigation data from the aircraft and a differentially processed GPS dataset. These are processed and checked with quality control software. Then the main processor,COASP, is run to process the noise and then produce an image over a calibration site.
