Abstract
DRDC Valcartier uses a split Hopkinson pressure bar system to conduct high strain rate tests on materials used in the protection of vehicles and personnel against blast and ballistic threats. Data discrepancy between laboratories using high strain rate systems has created a need to identify potential sources of error in set-up, data acquisition and processing. To ensure confidence in our test system, DRDC Valcartier initiated an analysis of every part of the setup and how they interact. The original system, built in early 1990, was therefore upgraded and modified to better control and measure impact velocity and stress/strain in the sample. The data acquisition and analysis programs were completely redesigned and implemented. Several approaches were pursued to verify the system and to calibrate the instrumented bars. The accuracy and precision of the entire data acquisition chain, including the analysis software, were quantified. This document summarizes the results of the investigation of potential sources of error based on equipment selection, installation and utilization and procedures for data acquisition and analysis.
