Abstract
The report summarizes the results and issues addressed as part of this ongoing research project on modeling a component substitution process. As part of the current task, a novel process model was developed to support maintainers with context sensitive guidance while performing maintenance tasks, such as component substitution. The major contributions of the work conducted as part of this project are the use of both a formal ontology and automated reasoning services to model a component substitution process. The developed approach provides a unified ontological representation of different information resources involved in such a typical software maintenance task. An experimental validation of the approach was performed by conducting a component substitution on Debrief, an open source application used by navies and companies around the world for the analysis and reporting of maritime exercises. It consisted of replacing a non-secure data access component with a component supporting encryption and decryption.
