Abstract
This report summarizes the results and issues addressed as part of the activities performed on conceptualizing and modeling a software component substitution process. As part of the current task, we refined the initial model developed during the previous project milestones and developed an initial prototype as a proof-of-concept implementation. Also, two case studies on medium size open source projects, i.e., Debrief and Lobo, were performed to validate and refine our model as well as the prototype tool. The maintenance tasks performed as part of these two case studies included a corrective maintenance task that involved correcting a seeded error in these programs, as well as an adaptive maintenance task that required performing component substitutions to adapt these existing systems to new user requirements.
