Development of a NURBS-based computational method for the VAST finite element program

Abstract
This report presents a recent study of a newly proposed NURBS-based computational method, which has the potential for a closer integration of engineering analysis capability with Computer Aided Design (CAD) systems. In this formulation, the problem geometry is described using NURBS functions, which always represent the true geometry exactly no matter how coarse the mesh is. In addition, once the initial coarse mesh is developed, mesh refinement can be conveniently performed without further communication with the CAD database. Through a direct comparison of this NURBS-based formulation with the conventional isoparametric finite elements, similarities and differences between them are clearly revealed. In the present contract, this NURBS-based formulation is implemented into the VAST program and extensively tested for a wide variety of engineering analyses, ranging from linear static and eigenvalue problems to highly nonlinear plastic post-collapse analysis of thin shell structures. The advantages of this NURBS-based element are confirmed by the numerical results. Further work required to make this new element formulation usable for practical engineering analyses is recommended. This includes enhancement of the pre- and post-processing capabilities in the existing GUI program.
