Abstract
During investigations undertaken as part of the Geoacoustic Parameter Sensitivity and Interaction Study, it was discovered that the ray-based acoustic model Bellhop appears to be especially sensitive to the specification of range-dependent bathymetry. This report quantifies that sensitivity, comparing Bellhop to the parabolic equation model PECan and finding that the transmission loss calculated by the two models is significantly different whenever there are changes in bottom slope. It then goes on to compare Bellhop to two other ray-based models and finds that all three ray models exhibit similar behaviour. Finally, the report presents evidence that suggests a possible explanation for the inaccuracies in the acoustic field generated by the ray models.
