Abstract
This technical memorandum documents the results of a survey, which was the third phase of Part I of the study on the socialization of officer cadets at the Royal Military College of Canada (RMC). Important trends in the survey data as well as insights into the processes of socialization experienced by the officer cadets are presented. The survey covered a number of aspects of the officer cadet experience at RMC, which were identified in the literature review and in focus group sessions in earlier phases of the study. Examples of these aspects of the officer cadets' experience include leadership and professional development, gender and diversity, career intentions within the Canadian Forces (CF), conduct values, and identity and affiliation to the CF. The survey was administered during the academic year of 2005-2006, with the goal of capturing a snapshot of the perspectives of a representative cross-section of officer cadets at RMC concerning the processes of socialization that they experience. Data collected from this survey was intended to add a quantitative dimension to the research, as well as inform the interview protocol that was anticipated to follow in the next phase of the study. Overall, the results of the survey indicate that the officer cadets appreciate the unique opportunities available to them at RMC and overwhelmingly endorse the CF core military values espoused at the college.
