Abstract
Complexity in military operations is a challenging problem. The understanding of complex situations (CSs), which comprises the military systems and the environment in which they operate, is of paramount importance. The current memorandum presents a CS that supports the development of a tool to augment complexity comprehension. This CS is inspired by the convoy attack problem experienced by the Canadian Forces deployed in Afghanistan. It consists of a convoy that circulates on a road and defends against insurgents attacking with improvised explosive devices and rocket propelled grenades. The convoy and the insurgents adapt their strategy after each convoy trip, which leads to a coevolution process. The complexity takes many forms in this CS: a multiobjective optimization problem, an adaptive and a coevolutionary process, a vast parameter space to explore, a control at the meta-level, some counterintuitive behaviours, evolutionary loops, a red queen effect, simultaneous short and long term effects, and a feedback loop. Analyses revealed the existence of robust solutions and provided some clues about how to find an optimal solution. Besides its original purpose, this CS could be exploited in order to conduct other studies in the domain of complexity. Finally, the coevolution perspective offers a new way to tackle the convoy problematics in a counter-insurgency context.
