Abstract
In July 2006, the Defence Minister of the French Republic and the Canadian minister of National Defence signed the Specific Agreement (SA) n° 30 that authorized the „Institut franco-allemand de recherches de Saint-Louis (ISL)' and the Defence Research and Development Canada – Valcartier (DRDC Valcartier) to collaborate on the theme of active polarimetric imaging for a period of three years. The collaboration aims at evaluating the potential of active polarimetric imaging to enhance the detection and the identification of targets associated with military operations or search and rescue missions, with a particular interest to the detection of manufactured objects on natural background. The approach consists in evaluating the potential of this technique in three bands of the electromagnetic spectrum: the near IR (InfraRed), the midwave IR and the long-wave IR. Beside the work associated with the construction of the active polarimetric imaging prototypes at the three different wavelengths, the SA has allowed the execution of two campaigns of measurements with military and civilian targets, one in France at the experimental range of the ISL, the other in Canada at the experimental range of DRDC Valcartier. This report describes the main results obtained and derives the themes of study that still need to be explored in this domain
