Abstract
In the context of modern defence and security operations, decision makers and first responders are faced with increasing amounts of dynamic information originating from a wide variety of sources and in a wide variety of formats, which they need to analyze in order to understand a situation and react promptly. Fortunately, Visual Analytics (VA) has emerged as an efficient way of handling and making sense of massive data sets by exploiting interactive visualization technologies and human cognitive abilities. Defence R&D Canada has conducted a review of the applicability of VA to support military and security operations. This memorandum is meant to provide a comprehensive review of VA and its applicability. First, we introduce the important visualization, interaction and reasoning scientific concepts supporting VA. Next, we present some advanced visual analytics techniques. Then, seven defence and security domains are presented along with promising research projects and commercial software: emergency management, military intelligence, counterterrorism, maritime domain awareness, cyber security, public health monitoring, and law enforcement. It is followed by an overview of significant commercial products. Finally, we identify key organisations and initiatives in this research field and relevant resources.
