Abstract
This report explores what scenarios and datasets could be used to exercise and validate a Maritime Domain Awareness Visual Analytics Prototype (MVAP). It briefly reviews 30 real-life maritime security scenarios, operational anecdotes from the RJOCs and reports from the technical literature. It then presents ten detailed fictional scenarios based on those real-life situations, in which the proposed new MVAP tools provide improved domain awareness. Scenarios include training, routine surveillance, anomaly detection, analysis of a Vessel of Interest, and exploration of a maritime knowledge base. The report explores the types of data required to exercise the MVAP apps and possible sources for that data. It lists 7 currently-available datasets and describes 3 existing tools for synthesizing datasets, and concludes that no existing solution is adequate. The report then proposes a synthetic maritime data generator architecture that borrows the best features from the 3 currently-existing generators. Finally, it speculates on how the generated data could be used in a mini-challenge exercise at a future Visual Analytics Science and Technology (VAST) conference.
