Abstract
The design and performance of a device used to measure the mass concentration of airborne snow is presented in this report. The device known as ASCME (Airborne Snow Concentration Measuring Equipment) has been used at DREV for two consecutive winters to measure snow concentration in conjunction with measurements of IR and visible transmittance during snowfalls. The relation between snow concentration and optical extinction coefficient is illustrated. The utility of the device in providing information about the scattering properties and size distribution of snow particles is also demonstrated.
