Abstract
The report describes the theory and implementation of a computer program, INSTRUM, that is designed to calculate the structural changes required to produce a prescribed modification of the natural frequencies or mode shapes of a baseline structure. INSTRUM is based upon a perturbation procedure and interfaces to the finite element program VAST. The specified modifications are expressed in terms of pecentage changes to original element properties such as thickness, mass density or elastic modules. Examples that illustrate the present capabilities and limitations of the program are presented.
