Abstract
The field generated in the lower medium, by an acoustic point source located above a plane interface, consists of the usual refracted ray and in addition the lateral wave, an inhomogeneous plane wave travelling parallel to the interface. In this report is is shown that for a sinusoidal profile surface, the lateral wave contains contributions from the scattered inhomogeneous waves predicted by the diffraction grating equation; these scattered waves decrease the amplitude of the lateral wave from its flat surface value.
