Abstract
A study of various polymer rubbers for use as candidate binders in pyrotechnic compositions was carried out at DREV in order to improve the signature detection of tracer compositions consisting of magnesium-strontium nitrate-binder ingredients. The use of rich fluorine content rubbers was observed to provide the best lumious performance to the compositions. The specific luminous efficiencies of the Kynar 461 and 9301 exceeded those obtained by a similar composition but containing the Viton A binder. The formulation/processing methods affected the overall performance of the tracer compositions.
