Abstract
Unwelded panels of HY80, HY100 and HSLA-80 were evaluated as were shielded metal arc weldments of HY80 typical of those present in Canadian Oberon Class submarines. While the unwelded panels and the 9018M shielded metal arc weldments exceeded the minimum level of plastic deformation required, cracking developed in the 7018 and 11018M weldments prematurely as a result of abnormal microstructures. Various narrow gap and pulsed MIG weldments in HY80 were similarly evaluated and all samples met required deformations. Results from the pulsed MIG comparisons showed that the WIC MIG pulsed regulator panels attained the highest levels of deformation prior to cracking. Welded samples in HY100 and HSLA also responded favorable to shock loading.
