Abstract
The paper deals with the statistics of crack growth data generated on a cathodically protected HY-80 plate and HY-80 weldments in seawater. The experimental a and N data were obtained at constant delta K and at 0.001 inch crack intervals. The delta K was varied from 17.1 to 25 ksi square root in., at R=0.5, and from 20 to 30 ksi square root in., at R=0.1. From a large number of a and N data obtained at each delta K, the da/dN was calculated using various data averaging increments (delta C). For the analysis, the fatigue crack growth was treated as a random process on the microscopic and macroscopic scale. The da/dN was selected as an independent variable. Typical results of crack growth rate vs a are given for rising and falling rates with growth and periodicity effect, and examples of the effect of averaging increment are given. TRUNCATED
