SHIELDED METAL ARC WELDING OF HY100 STEEL PLATE WITH E12018-M2 ELECTRODES

Abstract
A total of four weldments were produced from 1.0" thick HY100 plate, three in the flat position and one in the horizontal position. The welding was carried out using a restricted heat input and strictly controlled minimum preheat/maximum interpass temperatures. The finished weldments were subjected to extensive radiographic and ultrasonic examination and proven to be defect free. Metallography and hardness measurements were performed on one sample. The microstructure of the weld metal consisted of fine grain acicular ferrite with an average hardness of 224 HK.500. The maximum heat affected zone hardness occurred in the fine grain region and was found to be 334 HK.500.
