EFFECTS OF AVERAGING OF THE da/dN DATA ON MEAN CYCLE LIFE IN THE HY-80 PLATE STEEL

Abstract
The paper analyzes the effects of crack increments (delta C), over which the da/dN data are averaged, on the prediction of mean life cycles in the HY-80 1-inch thick plate steel. The analysis indicates that even though the mean cycle life is not delta C-dependent, its standard deviation is. The confidence in the mean cycle life predictions is therefore also affected by the variations in the standard deviations. Hence a thorough analysis for a selected set of da/dN data obtained at various delta C is presented.
