EXPLOSION BULGE EVALUATION OF SMAW AND NARROW GAP WELDMENTS

Abstract
An integral part of the Submarine Materials Technology Program at DREA is the investigation of submarine pressure hull weldment response to shock loadings using the explosion bulge procedure. This technique has been used to study the plastic behavior of weldments currently in use on OBERON class submarines and in novel weldments under consideration for use in the future replacement submarine fabrication program in Canada. The paper summarizes the results of testing of HY80 base plate, shielded metal arc weldments of HY80 and narrow gap weldments of HY80.
