- Abstract
- The DREA instrumented impact testing system has been calibrated using a servo hydraulic fatigue machine, a low blow technique, a break/no break technique and light flags. A program has been prepared to analyse load-time data and to permit compliance corrections for machine and sample. Studies have been completed on the effect of velocity on the ratio of energy involved in deformation vs fracture for notched and pre-cracked samples. Studies have also been carried out on specimen optimization for J sub Id determination. J-integral and dynamic tear results have been acquired for SMAW, MIG, SAW, and Narrow Grap Weldments and HAZ's. It has been found that most of the weldments considered exhibit satisfactory toughness for use in pressure hull fabrication.
