Abstract
The Canadian Army Trophy (CAT) is a prestigious NATO tank gunnery competition. Even though the competition is in large part equipment oriented, the importance of the "human element" was recognized. The Royal Canadian Dragoons were able to adapt procedures used in sport psychology to prepare their tank crews for training and competition. The men rated all components of the psychological training program as helpful. The program components they judged as most effective were competition simulation, specific goal setting, pre-competition plan, competition focus plan, individual meetings and focussed practice.
