Abstract
The report deals with the characterization of fire retarded, glass reinforced plastics by mechanical testing. Results presented here were obtained on GRP's with and without fire retardants, after their exposure to elevated temperatures. These plastics were prepared from three types of polyester resins, one vinylester and one epoxy resin. Flame retardants included antimony trioxide, zinc borate, aluminium trihydrate and Nyacol. Over 1400 tests were performed in order to determine all tensile, flexural, impact and shear properties and deflection temperatures in these plastics after their exposure to 23C, 150C, 225C and 300C.
