Abstract
The Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) will allow the mariner to navigate and track the course of his ship using information from an electronic chart. As more information is added to the display, there is the potential for the resulting clutter to cause decrements in performance. The effects of information quantity on ECDIS was investigated by testing the performance of nine cartographers and navigators on three types of displays. The displays consisted of a minimum information electronic chart (EC) that contained a minimum set of information required for safe navigation, a maximum information EC that contained the same information as the paper chart, and a paper chart.
