Abstract
A system to automatically detect ship wakes in synthetic aperture radar ocean images has been developed. The basic system does the Radon transform of the SAR image, then detects bright and dark peaks produced in the transform by wakes in the image. It was tested on a set of 26 400x400 Seasat images; it had a probability of detection (PD) of 0.46 for individual wake components, and a false alarm rate (FAR) of 9 alarms per 512x512 area. It detected at least one wake component for every ship in the images.
