SENSITIVITY OF THE LIDAR RATIO TO CHANGES IN THE PARTICLE SIZE DISTRIBUTION AND REFRACTIVE INDEX

Abstract
A large numerical and literature survey is conducted to identify for what combination of particle size and index of refraction a good linear relationship exists between extinction and backscatter in an aerosol composed of spheres. The physical reasons are given for each region of size and index explored explaining why or why not such a relationship occurs. Excellent agreement is found between the calculation and the literature allowing for a simple estimate of the error in extinction from a lidar inversion due to variation in this relationship.
