Abstract
FERROSCAN (TRADEMARK) is a device that has been developed for the Canadian Department of National Defence by Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) for monitoring the relative concentration of ferromagnetic wear debris in fluid systems and is produced by SENSYS, a business unit of AECL. FERROSCAN (TRADEMARK) generates a wear profile in real time and uses it to detect the onset of an increase in the rate of wear of ferromagnetic components. The paper describes the background, development and operating principles of the sensor and presents some engineering test results.
