Abstract
In view of the drawbacks of the present red phosphorus composition used in a marine location marker, it was decided to carry out an experimental program of work in an attempt to correct some of these deficiencies. A polybutadiene rubber was chosen to replace the linseed oil binder as it demonstrated the most suitable processing and burning characteristics. Being soft and rubber-like, it provided the composition with the desirable combination of good mechanical strength, resilience against cracking and low friction sensitivity.
