Abstract
An investigation of the image produced by a commercial side-scan sonar operating against moored reflectors is reported. This study of reflections from triangular corner cubes showed that energy broadcast and received at angles of up to 30 degrees can appear on the image of high reflectivity targets, even with sonars of nominal beamwidths of less than 1 degree. This unusual image was found to be consistent with the beam pattern of the transducer. An effect of towfish yaw could also be seen in the image studied.
