Abstract
The problem posed (recovering unknown conductivity from boundary measurements) is a non-linear inverse problem. Instead of solving the forward problem under prescribed boundary conditions, the authors instead use the forward problem as the basis of the recovery algorithm. Because it is non-linear, they use an interative optimization technique to solve the problem. In 2D at least, good recovery of conductivity distributions is demonstrated. Problems which occurred in the 3D case are discussed along with possible solutions. In both 2D and 3D, the execution time requirements set forth in the contract can be met using a parallel processing system. The combination of a transputer based parallel system and an enhanced algorithm should allow the construction of a practical and compact field imaging system.
