Abstract
The report outlines the major neural net architectures, focussing on those most likely to be applicable to the sonar environment. The current literature of direct relevance is examined in some detail and some simple experiments with various nets are carried out. The general conclusion is that there is, as yet, no convincing evidence that neural nets offer performance clearly superior to other existing techniques in the sonar field.
